The Master of Design at Ravensbourne includes a unit on design thinking in its curriculum. It is very practical oriented as I noticed right at our first lecture. After a short introduction to the term design thinking and what it means in theory, we straight jumped into practice. Therefore we ran through Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design Re-design the Gift Giving Experience exercise. It is freely available here so have a detailed look all the steps or even run through it with a partner.

We were asked to re-design a wallet and worked in teams of two students to run through each step of the exercise. It was pretty intense because each step is limited to a short amount of time. Given the task of coming up with a better re-designed wallet, the time pressure seems to be inhibiting at first. However, it really is key to learning some key characteristics of design thinking: A focus on generation of many, qualitative solutions and thinking out of the box (let’s name it lateral thinking). These findings emerge through a user-centred approach (in this case we used interviews) followed by an iterative progress of analysis and synthesis towards a final solution.

I enjoyed this exercise very much and I was impressed by how the solution of each team differed – and at the same time how many innovative and distinct redesigns were able to created just within a few minutes of prototyping. On top of this, the experience was very useful for our big live project (The Shift) to follow.
